About Us

Gilden Test & Inspection Ltd is a family run business with over 15 years experience. We have built a good relationship with loyal clients who continue to use us year on year due to our thorough yet unobtrusive approach. We pride ourselves in offering a bespoke, risk assessed service, whilst maintaing reasonable cost and high efficiency.

What is PAT?

The definition “portable appliance testing” can be misleading. The Code of Practice for the In-Service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment has a broad scope and applies to any appliance which is connected to a mains electrical supply.

So the appliance may be portable or it may be stationary. It may have a three pin plug or it may have a hard-wired connection into the mains circuit. All should be maintained so as to prevent such danger.

When testing a microwave oven for electrical safety we also carry out a radio frequency or microwave leakage test. We are able to test both domestic and industrial microwave ovens.

Testing Process

Our testing procedure adheres closely to that established in the Code of Practice for the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

We find that many PAT companies will only do a “visual check” on sensitive IT equipment. At GTI we have invested in equipment which can safely test IT appliances so that a complete service is provided.

As each appliance is tested, the results are recorded in a computerised asset inventory which includes much more information than purely whether the appliance passed or failed.

Of course, our test equipment must be safe and accurate. To this end it is annually calibrated and tested. Copies of our calibration certificates are included in our Exchange of Information file.

Record Keeping

There is very little value in receiving a written report that just states whether appliances have passed or failed the test. In fact it defeats the object of In-Service Inspection and Testing.

With GTI as each item is tested the results are recorded in a fully computerised asset inventory which shows not just the current test results but also those of the preceding test periods. This helps to keep track of deterioration and can give some forecast as to when appliances may need attention or replacement in the future.

We have included here a sample electrical testing report which shows the test results from a range of appliances over a period of years.

Clients and Testimonials

GTI are the approved contractor for portable appliance testing for the National Trust properties in the South-East region of the UK. Because The National Trust properties are open to the public it is essential that appliances on display such a lamps or interactive IT equipment, vending machines, and display cabinets are fully tested to ensure their safety. Additionally there are many appliances that National Trust staff use that the public don’t come into contact with – these are also fully tested to ensure their safety. We started working with The National Trust in 2001 and are proud to have such a prestigious name as one of our clients.

“I am pleased to confirm that it has been our experience that Gilden Test & Inspection offer a thoroughly professional service throughout all stages of the electrical testing process. Always ensuring they fully understand our requirements, they have provided us with clear consistent advice commensurate with the theme and scale of our operations, ensuring that safety is paramount at all times. Bodiam Castle anticipates working with Matthew Gilden in the future and I have no hesitation in recommending this firm’s services.”

Stevens Rowsell is an engineering company based in Hastings, East Sussex. This company uses many different categories of equipment in different environments from three phase welding appliances on the factory floor to CAD IT equipment and servers. GTI have been working with Stevens Rowsell since 2002 helping them to maintain electrical safety.

“In a business world where mediocre customer service and indifferent attitude has become par for the course it makes a refreshing change to deal with an organised, friendly and totally customer focused company that actually deliver their promises on time as agreed…and do a professional job”

GTI are the approved contractor for portable appliance testing for EIS on their sites in Maidstone, Gravesend and Canterbury. We also care for the needs of Advisory Service Kent and Partnership With Parents in Maidstone.

These KCC departments asked GTI to implement a programme of inspection and testing according to the frequencies established in The Code of Practice for the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

We remind each department when testing or inspection is due, carry out the required services and then issue a report and certificate.
