What is PAT?
The definition “portable appliance testing” can be misleading. The Code of Practice for the In-Service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment has a broad scope and applies to any appliance which is connected to a mains electrical supply.
So the appliance may be portable or it may be stationary. It may have a three pin plug or it may have a hard-wired connection into the mains circuit. All should be maintained so as to prevent such danger.
When testing a microwave oven for electrical safety we also carry out a radio frequency or microwave leakage test. We are able to test both domestic and industrial microwave ovens.
Our testing procedure adheres closely to that established in the Code of Practice for the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.
We find that many PAT companies will only do a “visual check” on sensitive IT equipment. At GTI we have invested in equipment which can safely test IT appliances so that a complete service is provided.
As each appliance is tested, the results are recorded in a computerised asset inventory which includes much more information than purely whether the appliance passed or failed.
Of course, our test equipment must be safe and accurate. To this end it is annually calibrated and tested. Copies of our calibration certificates are included in our Exchange of Information file.
There is very little value in receiving a written report that just states whether appliances have passed or failed the test. In fact it defeats the object of In-Service Inspection and Testing.
With GTI as each item is tested the results are recorded in a fully computerised asset inventory which shows not just the current test results but also those of the preceding test periods. This helps to keep track of deterioration and can give some forecast as to when appliances may need attention or replacement in the future.

These KCC departments asked GTI to implement a programme of inspection and testing according to the frequencies established in The Code of Practice for the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.
We remind each department when testing or inspection is due, carry out the required services and then issue a report and certificate.
