Equipment Covered
The definition "portable appliance testing" can be misleading. The equipment covered by in-service inspection & testing could fall into any of the following categories:
- Hand-held. Intended to be held in the hand during normal use.
- Portable. Less than 18kg in mass, that is intended to be or can be moved while in operation
- Movable. Less than 18kg in mass & not fixed or equipment with wheels or castors to facilitate movement
by the operator as required to perform it's intended use.
- IT. Business equipment including computers, monitors, etc.
- Stationary. Equipment with a mass exceeding 18kg, not provided with carrying handle.
- Fixed. Fastened or secured in a specified location.
So the appliance may be portable or it may be stationary. It may have a three pin plug or it may have a hard-wired connection into the mains circuit. All should be maintained so as to prevent such danger.
When testing a microwave oven for electrical safety we also carry out a radio frequency or microwave leakage test. We are able to test both domestic and industrial microwave ovens.
