Equipment Covered

Giving it the definition "portable appliance" testing can be misleading. The equipment covered by in-service inspection & testing could fall into any of the following categories:

• Hand-held. Intended to be held in the hand during normal use.
• Portable. Less than 18kg in mass, that is intended to be or can be moved while in operation
• Movable. Less than 18kg in mass & not fixed or equipment with wheels or castors to facilitate movement by the operator as required to perform it's intended use.
• IT. Business equipment including computers, monitors, faxes etc.
• Stationary. Equipment with a mass exceeding 18kg, not provided with carrying handle.

So the appliance may be portable or it may be stationary. It may have a three pin plug or it may have a hard-wired connection into the mains circuit. All should be maintained so as to prevent such danger.

Another factor is whether the equipment is Class 1 or Class 2.

Class 1 - Equipment in which electric shock does not rely on basic insulation only, but which includes a means for the connection of exposed conductive parts to a protective conductor in the fixed wiring of the installation.

Class 2 - Equipment in which electric shock does not rely on basic insulation only, but in which additional safety precautions such as supplementary insulation are provided, there being no provision for the connection of exposed metalwork of the equipment to a protective conductor in the fixed wiring of the installation.
